Chicago Cubs Bullpen and Roster Adjustments

1 month ago 0

The Chicago Cubs are closely examining their roster, especially the bullpen, in the upcoming days. The return of utilityman Matt Shaw on Friday adds to the options for manager Craig Counsell. Matt Shaw’s return from the injured list could influence lineup decisions, while the bullpen’s performance is under scrutiny given potential returns of players like Hoby Milner and Edward Cabrera.

September Roster Changes

The Cubs will have the option to add two players, including a pitcher, as the calendar turns to September. This decision is crucial as the team aims for an optimal mix of eight pitchers for the postseason. Friday’s 10-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds highlighted the bullpen’s significance. During this game, Cubs relievers conceded eight runs, with Trent Thornton allowing five in the sixth inning. Before Friday, Thornton had a 2.32 ERA and had not given up a run in August.

Analyzing Bullpen Composition

The Cubs’ bullpen currently has only three pitchers with minor-league options. These include Ryan Zeferjahn, Ryan Rolison, and Daniel Palencia. The team might face tough decisions if they wish to bring back Hoby Milner, who completed a rehab assignment and is waiting for activation. Discussions about potential player assignments or designations are ongoing, with Counsell commenting that no final decision has been made yet.

Edward Cabrera’s Recovery

Edward Cabrera, involved in strengthening the bullpen, threw a live batting practice session in Arizona. The team hopes short outings will help him manage recurring blister issues which have affected his performance this season. Manager Counsell indicated that Cabera’s role will focus on shorter game stints in the future.

Utilityman Matt Shaw’s Role

Matt Shaw’s return has boosted the Cubs’ offense. Having struggled with a sprained left hand, his comeback offers more strategic lineup options. Shaw contributed significantly in Friday’s game with a pinch-hit double during a rally in the eighth inning. Though the Cubs scored eight runs, the Reds’ ten runs underscored the challenge Cubs face with their relief pitching.

As Shaw enhances the bench options, the team will continue strategizing for late-game situations, acknowledging the need for flexibility and depth in the roster.
