Chicago White Sox Triumphs in 2026 Postseason

51 minutes ago 0

The Chicago White Sox defied expectations this season. After enduring three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses, they advanced to the 2026 postseason. Now, they are in the American League Division Series after a sweep of the Houston Astros in a best-of-three wild-card series.

Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, celebrating in the champagne-drenched clubhouse at Daikin Park, expressed profound belief in the team. He likened this celebration, after a 7-3 victory over the Astros, to the 2005 World Series win at the same location. The Sox’s win marks their first playoff series victory since that memorable 2005 season. With this victory, they face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS starting Saturday.

As the team gathered on the mound to celebrate, chants of “Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry!” echoed, underscoring the players’ appreciation for Reinsdorf. He acknowledged the unlikely success story of this team, highlighting that the players’ belief in themselves was unwavering, despite skepticism from fans and media.

Pitcher Davis Martin, the longest-tenured player, emphasized the team’s confidence. He stated that without belief in their playoff potential and the ability to win playoff games, players wouldn’t fit in the locker room culture. The performance against a .500 team like the Astros became a testament to the Sox’s determination, even though the Astros’ presence in the postseason came from being part of the weak AL West.

Chris Getz, the general manager, noted the unconventional strategies employed. He wasn’t excessively optimistic about postseason success in the spring, but the result became a lesson in perseverance. The White Sox front office threw a celebration, vindicating Reinsdorf’s decision to promote Getz to GM, despite some initial skepticism.

Reinsdorf also reflected on previous achievements, including the Michael Jordan era with the Bulls and the 2005 White Sox title. He emphasized enjoyment over rankings, considering each victory significant.

The White Sox organization, traditionally insular, moved toward change by promoting Getz, replacing Rick Hahn in 2023. Despite initial resistance to Getz’s appointment, his decisions ended up fruitful. The team benefited from strategic trades and signings, exemplified by the acquisition of promising players like Chase Meidroth, Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, and Miguel Vargas. Additionally, signing Munetaka Murakami was pivotal last winter.

Reinsdorf finally accepted Getz as the right choice, admitting he realized he had his ideal GM within the organization. Reinsdorf credited Getz for fostering a family atmosphere within the club, emphasizing time spent together and tight-knit relationships as factors contributing to their success.

Looking back, Martin recalled the difficult 2024 season with 121 losses, yet he noted the significant progress the team exhibited since then. The hope was set for a 2027 turnaround, but Reinsdorf was pleasantly surprised by the results in 2026.

As the White Sox advance to Cleveland, they stepped into a spotlight they previously lacked. Reinsdorf refrained from making bold predictions, acknowledging the unpredictability of baseball. He expressed hope for success, suggesting that anything remains possible for the team.
