KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Manager Will Venable recently reflected on the 2026 Chicago White Sox, describing the team as ‘excited.’ From playing baseball to supporting each other, the excitement drives them forward. This positive approach positions the White Sox favorably as they compete for their first postseason appearance since 2021.
They entered the final week of the regular season holding the third American League wild-card spot, leading the Houston Astros by three games with six games left. Additionally, they are closely challenging the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central title, trailing by just one game.
The final stretch started with a series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. It marks a significant turnaround for a team that lost over 100 games in the past three years, including 121 defeats in 2024.
“Our team is not perfect, no team is perfect,” Venable observed. He highlighted the inconsistencies in their performance, noting that the offense, pitching, base running, and defense have had their ups and downs.
Despite facing rough patches in September, including a 5-10 streak that affected their AL Central standing, the team has rebounded. Venable praised their resilience and ability to win despite challenges.
The White Sox’s offense has been robust, leading the league in runs (733) and ranking third in home runs (199). The lineup boasts three players with over 30 home runs: Miguel Vargas (33), Munetaka Murakami (32), and Colson Montgomery (31). The bullpen has also been crucial, with versatile performances from players like Grant Taylor.
Venable highlighted, “We certainly have guys that are performing really well, but the contributions come from everywhere.”
Maintaining harmony within the team while implementing strategic changes has been essential. Venable noted the importance of the players’ buy-in whether it’s adjusting to matchups or rotation changes.
“Establishing the approach and supporting a positive environment are key. The leaders and young players have been open and flexible, allowing strategic maneuvers without compromising morale.”
Venable recognizes the pressure of a playoff push but emphasizes focusing on playing well for teammates, rather than just securing a playoff spot. He sees this as shifting to the ‘right type’ of pressure.
The coaching staff provides crucial support, reminding players of their accomplishments and maintaining a relaxed environment. Venable underlines the importance of the team enjoying the journey as they pursue an opportunity filled with potential.
