Chris Sale’s Dominant Shutout Over Dodgers Highlights His Talents

1 month ago 0

Chris Sale made a statement with his performance on Thursday, securing a 1-0 victory for the Atlanta Braves over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sale threw 97 pitches through eight innings before asserting to manager Walt Weiss that he was set to finish the game, requiring just 12 more pitches for the final three outs.

This victory was the conclusion of a three-game sweep against the Dodgers, with the Braves winning each game by a single run. At 37 years old, Sale demonstrated his enduring prowess, reaffirming his position among the top contenders for the National League Cy Young Award, with Milwaukee Brewers’ Jacob Misiorowski also in the race.

On Thursday, Sale threw his fastest pitches since 2018 with Shohei Ohtani in the batter’s box, achieving his first complete game since 2019. His ERA is now 2.06, the second-best in the majors, trailing only Misiorowski. Sale has maintained a streak of 21 games allowing three runs or fewer.

Ohtani was struck out twice by Sale, who ended the night with 11 strikeouts. Weiss remarked on Sale’s career and current performance, stating: “You can make an argument that, as great a career as he’s having, he’s as good now as he’s ever been.”

Sale has not hit triple digits with his fastball since July 6, 2018, during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox claimed the World Series title that year, prior to Sale’s Tommy John surgery.

In an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Sale expressed the challenges faced against strong teams, describing how matches against competitors like the Dodgers necessitate putting one’s best foot forward.

The emotional night was captured in videos, showing Sale’s son realizing his father’s return to the mound for the ninth inning. Sale did not see the video until after the game, acknowledging the personal value of such moments.

Before the game, Sale learned of a personal loss, the passing of Ashley Foss, a close family friend who succumbed to cancer. Foss’s family managed Sale’s finances for years, creating a strong bond between the families.

Despite Sale’s spotlight performance, Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto also displayed considerable skill, pitching 6.1 innings and conceding one run through Braves catcher Drake Baldwin’s solo homer.

The Braves will host the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series beginning Friday night. The Dodgers head to Detroit as they face the Tigers, with Tarik Skubal confronting his previous team post-trade.
