Researchers in Italy have identified a potential link between the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis (tadalafil) and muscle regeneration. The study, appearing in the journal Molecular Biology Reports, investigated the drug’s effects on mouse muscle cells in the lab.
Over a span of seven days, researchers observed how tadalafil influenced muscle cell growth, survival, and development. Their findings showed an increase in muscle precursor cells, which play a critical role in the initial stages of muscle formation. Tadalafil also assisted in the survival of these cells, contributed to muscle repair by promoting growth, and reduced cell death.
Researchers in Italy have discovered a potential association between Cialis and muscle regeneration.
The study’s positive outcomes come with a caveat. Tadalafil delayed the full maturation of muscle cells, suggesting it may support muscle regeneration but not necessarily enhance muscle size and functionality in humans.
This research was conducted on mouse models, and the applicability to humans remains uncertain. Due to the study’s short duration, further exploration is necessary to determine tadalafil’s long-term effects.
Dr. Cristina Antinozzi, from the University of Rome Foro Italico, remarked that the findings provide an “encouraging look” at tadalafil’s potential to aid muscle repair and regeneration. However, more research is needed before confirming its efficacy in muscle building or recovery for humans.
Dr. Kien Vuu, a radiologist not involved in the study, highlighted the importance of additional research from a longevity perspective. Age-related muscle loss significantly impacts frailty and metabolic dysfunction. While tadalafil showed potential, Vuu emphasized that proven methods like resistance training, adequate protein intake, and quality sleep are essential for maintaining muscle health as we age.
Despite the intriguing findings, lifestyle choices remain the most reliable methods for preserving muscle strength and function. Additionally, it’s important to note tadalafil’s risks, such as blood pressure issues when combined with nitrates. People should avoid using the drug for muscle-building purposes based solely on current research.
