Pennsylvania Faces Severe Measles Outbreak Amidst Vaccination Decline

49 minutes ago 0

Pennsylvania is currently grappling with its worst measles outbreak in 35 years, reporting its sixth measles-related death recently. The state has recorded over 1,100 cases, though experts believe the true number could be higher. The latest death involved a 39-year-old unvaccinated woman in Franklin County. The county coroner cited a ‘probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of the measles’ as the cause of death. This incident aligns with the state’s definition of a measles-associated death.

The state has had the resources to combat the outbreak on its own, according to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. He has criticized Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the decline in vaccinations and public trust in vaccine safety. Despite Kennedy’s offer to help, Shapiro declined external assistance in August.

Local efforts to increase vaccination have shown progress. State health department reports reveal that more than 5,700 MMR vaccines were administered at 198 pop-up clinics since the outbreak began in late April. Interest in vaccinations has surged, with health providers administering over 56,000 doses in September alone, a significant increase from the average of 25,000 monthly doses.

Pennsylvania continues to coordinate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to manage the outbreak. The state initiated a request for emergency Epi-Aid, seeking CDC epidemiologists to support outbreak-response efforts. This request specified that the CDC must publicly acknowledge the state’s reported deaths. While the CDC has acknowledged only two deaths, officials confirmed Pennsylvania’s formal request for federal aid. A spokesperson stated that the CDC will deploy additional support to collaborate with state and local health officials in tackling the outbreak and preventing further spread.
