Tammi Carr vividly recalls her son CJ’s eagerness to join his friends in tackle football. The Carr family enforced a rule: CJ had to wait until seventh grade to play. Up until sixth grade, he played flag football with his friends under the coaching of their fathers. Despite his pleading to switch to tackle football, his parents remained firm in their decision. This led to CJ assisting his friends at their tackle games from the sidelines until the next year when he could finally join them on the field.
Once allowed to play, CJ embraced the sport passionately. “I’m never taking this off,” he declared, reveling in the daily practice, analysis of film, and the overall experience of football. Growing up with two grandfathers who were College Football Hall of Famers, CJ seemed destined for a path in football.
CJ’s personal journey brought him to Notre Dame, a significant decision given his deep-rooted family ties to Michigan football. His grandfather, Tom Curtis, was an All-America safety for the Wolverines, and his other grandfather, Lloyd Carr, led Michigan to multiple Big Ten titles and a national championship as head coach. CJ’s father, Jason, also a former Michigan quarterback, supported CJ alongside his brother Tommy, who now plays as a quarterback at Michigan.
Despite his lineage, CJ chose Notre Dame. After a redshirt season, CJ started in 2025, throwing for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Irish team finished ranked No. 10 but just missed the College Football Playoff. Named second-team freshman All-America by The Athletic, CJ’s accomplishments came alongside the top running back duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.
As CJ enters the 2026 season, facing greater expectations due to Love and Price’s departure to the NFL, Notre Dame aims for a CFP championship. The team ranks No. 4 in the preseason AP poll, and CJ is considered among the top quarterbacks and a preseason Heisman Trophy contender.
CJ’s preparation is marked by a distinct mental toughness. Defined as “developing a mindset where you will not make or accept an excuse for your lack of success,” Jason Carr instilled this principle in CJ, reinforcing it during his emotional moments as a young athlete. This resilience became a cornerstone of CJ’s approach in sports.
CJ Carr’s personal history interweaves with his understanding of overcoming challenges. The Carr family faced loss when CJ’s younger brother, Chad, died at age 5 from DIPG, an aggressive brain tumor. Chad enriched the family with his vibrant personality, loving sports humor and orchestrating pranks.
In remembrance of Chad, CJ wrote an emotional tribute for The Players’ Tribune, showcasing Chad’s joyful spirit. This part of CJ’s life has contributed to his perspective on pressure and difficulty, bringing resilience to his football journey. Chad’s legacy inspired the Carr family’s involvement in the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation, focusing on family values and contributing to fighting the tumor.
CJ’s competitiveness is evident in his interactions, from playing ping-pong with teammates to strategizing on the football field. Coach Marcus Freeman praises CJ’s preparation and knowledge which make him stand out among players. As Notre Dame’s coordinator on the field, CJ guides his team, avoiding errors and facilitating their strategic plays.
Under CJ’s leadership, Notre Dame seeks redemption from narrowly missing the CFP last year. The mantra “Leave No Doubt” fuels their ambition for success, as CJ and his teammates aim to demonstrate their potential throughout the 2026 season.
CJ’s dedication extends beyond the field as he strengthens ties with teammates through bonding activities, understanding one another more deeply. His preparation during the offseason reinforces his commitment to Notre Dame’s goals.
Despite his growing fame, CJ retains a grounded perspective. He navigates his role with humility, treating himself as an equal among his teammates, resonating as “one of the guys.” His focus and approach earn the respect of teammates and coaches, showcasing both leadership and determination to succeed.
