Clacton Special Election Draws Unusual Candidates and Circumstances

The Clacton special election is garnering attention for its extensive list of candidates. A record 34 candidates are competing, including unique figures like Howling Laud Hope of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White representing the Everyone is God Party. These candidates have been engaging with Clacton’s 80,000 eligible voters in recent weeks.

Residents face a challenge with ballot papers stretching about 3 feet long, making navigation tricky. Voter turnout is expected to be low, partly because special elections usually attract less interest. In July 2024’s general election, Farage faced eight opponents, receiving 21,225 votes which equated to 46.2%. The turnout then hit 58.7%.

The timing of this election during summer holidays means many voters are away. A concurrent U.K. heatwave could deter others from visiting polling stations as they find relief from temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

Nigel Farage, elected to Parliament in 2024 after multiple attempts, is under financial scrutiny. Parliament’s standards watchdog is probing an undeclared 5 million pound ($6.7 million) donation from Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency billionaire based in Thailand. Farage argues it was a personal gift for security before his election and thus not subject to disclosure rules for politicians.

Farage resigned on July 7, halting the investigation which would resume if he wins the upcoming election. A rule breach may spark a recall petition, triggering another election with associated costs for taxpayers. This subsequent election would allow other parties to compete.

Farage initiated this election after Andy Burnham’s return to Parliament following a special election in Makerfield. Burnham’s campaign led him to become Britain’s prime minister, following Keir Starmer’s resignation. However, Farage’s hopes for a positive campaign were dashed by limited party engagement and facing candidates like Count Binface.

Count Binface, a comedic figure played by Jon Harvey, regularly joins high-profile elections. Harvey aims to promote Britain’s democratic values through his candidacies. Despite modest support, with only 95 votes in a recent Makerfield election, he anticipates better results in Clacton as voters from other parties support him to embarrass Farage.

The election results will be revealed on Friday morning between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., with Farage and his fellow candidates onstage.
