Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom appeared on Laura Ingraham’s show to discuss his courtside ejection during a WNBA game between Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky. During the match, Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud confronted Freedom with offensive remarks after he celebrated a three-pointer by Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Freedom was wearing a shirt defining ‘woman’ as ‘adult human female’.
Freedom, a Turkish-American and former player known for his human rights activism, explained he attended the game because of his love for basketball and to support Cunningham, who has been criticized for defending female sports.
According to Freedom, Cloud’s reaction included personal insults and explicit language, which surprised him. He was at the game to protect women and support athletes like Cunningham. Despite his peaceful intentions, the stadium security removed him rather than penalizing Cloud for her behavior.
“I actually loved the game and enjoyed the game,” Freedom stated.
Freedom expressed confusion and disappointment, noting Cloud’s choice of words in front of young fans. He believed Cloud should have been disciplined for her conduct.
The league’s response has been controversial. Freedom claimed that Article 13 Section 1 of the WNBA rulebook allows him to play if he identifies as a woman, which he does. However, media outlets reported that Kanter Freedom will not be eligible to be drafted into the WNBA in the future.
Freedom criticized the current gender policy seen through his primetime appearance. He feels the league fears he might be drafted next year due to his identification as a woman. Royce White, a former NBA pick, warned that the WNBA might ban Freedom from attending future games due to this controversy.
The episode has raised questions about gender identification rules within sports organizations. Freedom’s interview highlighted the ongoing debate about these policies.
