The U.S. Coast Guard successfully intercepted a boat suspected of smuggling more than 7,250 pounds of cocaine off the coast of Puerto Rico. The intercepted amount is valued at approximately $54.5 million. The operation was carried out near 50 miles from the U.S. territory.
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon played a critical role in the interception. This was accomplished with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) air marine operations. Five individuals aboard the suspected smuggling vessel were detained for investigation.
A statement from Lieutenant Commander Michael D. Torgesen highlighted the exceptional teamwork between the Coast Guard and CBP. He praised the seamless coordination and the dedication of the Coast Guard crew in mounting the operation. The suspected smuggling boat was destroyed because it posed a navigation threat.
Coast Guard Southeast District Commander Admiral Adam Chamie commented on the success of the operation, noting that it demonstrated the effectiveness of interagency partnerships and the readiness of the crews. As of now, no official charges have been announced in connection to this interdiction.
This interception follows a significant milestone earlier in the week when the Coast Guard offloaded over 75,000 pounds of illicit narcotics worth $473 million in Port Everglades, Miami, Florida.
