Cold Case Breakthrough: Tracking a Serial Predator

42 minutes ago 0

Detective Susan Logothetti is dedicated to solving cold cases in Everett, Washington. One case deeply affected her: the murder of Judy Weaver in 1984. Weaver, 42, was a beloved local bar manager known for her strong personality.

The Murder of Judy Weaver

On June 1, 1984, Weaver was tipsy and decided to walk home after celebrating with friends. She never made it safely inside. Her unlocked home became the scene of her murder, with clear signs of assault.

Her fiancé, Bill Richards, was the initial suspect, but evidence was insufficient to charge him. Richards died with the cloud of suspicion hanging over him.

Advances in DNA Technology

In January 2023, Logothetti explored using DNA technology to possibly identify Weaver’s killer. The results pointed to a new suspect: Mitchell Allen Gaff, a known sex offender.

Gaff’s violence dated back to 1979 when he attacked police officer Jackie Brown. Despite being convicted, he was only sentenced to one year of work release and probation. He reoffended, assaulting teenage sisters Angela and Myra in 1984.

Linking Gaff to the Crime

By 2024, Detective Logothetti devised a plan to obtain Gaff’s fresh DNA using a clever gum tactic. Gaff’s DNA was matched to evidence from Judy Weaver’s murder.

Gaff had previously attacked several women and served extensive time in prison. Released in 2018, he lived quietly until the new evidence emerged.

A Second Cold Case

While preparing for Weaver’s case, Logothetti connected Gaff to a second cold case: the 1980 murder of Susan Vesey. A DNA match confirmed Gaff’s involvement, leading to further charges.

Guilty Pleas and Sentencing

In 2026, Gaff faced trial for both murders but pled guilty before it began. Prosecutors sought a lengthy sentence, given the nature and impact of his crimes.

The court sentenced Gaff to 50 years in prison. Victims and families shared stories of lasting trauma during the sentencing.

Closure for the Families

Jackie Brown, Gaff’s first known victim, felt a sense of closure. Judy Weaver’s family and friends finally saw justice for her and Susan Vesey.

Detective Logothetti’s relentless pursuit exemplifies the enduring quest for justice. The careful investigation and advanced technology were crucial in solving these cold cases.
