Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill at National Black Footwear Forum
On Saturday night, Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill took the stage at the National Black Footwear Forum in Detroit, Michigan. Their conversation centered on issues of racism, Kaepernick’s personal experiences, and his soon-to-be-released memoir, The Perilous Fight. OutKick reporters were present, though the event did not allow audience questions.
During their discussion, Hill highlighted a story from Kaepernick’s memoir that resonated with her. Kaepernick recounted an incident from his youth involving his mother’s wish for him to date Taylor Swift. Hill and Kaepernick conveyed how his mother’s preference for him to be with someone like Swift implied a disinterest in white women.
A Youthful Story Unearthed
OutKick acquired a copy of Kaepernick’s memoir, which narrates the tale involving his mother and Swift:
“With my own car, I experienced a teenage rite of passage: dating. I started seeing Crystal, a charming Black girl. With her, I felt different than at home. I could converse with Crystal easily, without explaining myself; she understood me without hesitation. Her family’s warmth stunned me during visits, and I felt relaxed instantly.”
Kaepernick further details his dating experiences: “I invited Crystal to the homecoming dance, a formal event with fancy attire. We enjoyed ourselves. When the portrait from that night arrived, depicting me and Crystal in a classic airbrushed frame, my mother hid it away in a drawer.”
He continued: “My mother persuaded me to invite Lindsay, a friend’s daughter, to the next formal dance. Lindsay was white. When I brought her photo home, my mother prominently displayed it on the wall. To her, Crystal was a temporary phase, while Lindsay was the ideal choice.”
Reflecting on these experiences, Kaepernick expressed disappointment in his mother’s inability to understand him. In the memoir, he shares that she suggested he ask Taylor Swift on a date when he was in the NFL. Despite his mother’s encouragement, Swift was not his type as he preferred Crystal, who was also an athlete.
Parental Influence and NFL Journey
Throughout the forum conversation, Kaepernick expressed dissatisfaction with his upbringing by white adoptive parents. He asserted they did not comprehend or support his identity as an African American, including during his early national anthem protests.
Kaepernick’s path to the NFL, despite these parental challenges, speaks to perseverance. Hill did not contest Kaepernick’s points, instead attributing his performance struggles to injuries and suggesting the Atlanta Falcons sign him as quarterback in 2026.
This commentary also touched on Travis Kelce’s relationship with Swift. It humorously noted that Swift may appreciate Kaepernick’s decision to ignore his mother’s dating advice. Bobby Burack is a writer for OutKick.
