In Jackson, Georgia, Republican Representative Mike Collins secured the GOP Senate nomination after a heated runoff against former college football coach Derek Dooley. Collins, renowned for his alignment with President Donald Trump, will challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the upcoming November election. This race is critical as it could determine whether Republicans retain their narrow Senate majority in the forthcoming midterms.
Ossoff, deemed one of the most at-risk Senate Democrats, is a top target for Republicans. Collins, representing Georgia’s 10th Congressional District between Atlanta and Augusta, is the son of the late Representative Mac Collins. He and his wife own a trucking company.

Dooley, a lawyer and ex-University of Tennessee football coach, competed as an outsider, criticizing Congress for careerism and lack of action. Despite receiving support from popular conservative Governor Brian Kemp, Dooley lost the runoff. Kemp’s political advisor was a key consultant for Dooley’s campaign.
While Collins emphasized his strong ties to Trump, the former president’s endorsement came last minute. Collins dismissed concerns about the timing, affirming Trump’s influence in the race.
Both candidates faced controversies during their campaigns. Collins encountered scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee over allegations related to a district office intern. Dooley, in contrast, faced accusations of involvement in a “pay-to-play” scandal with his brother and Governor Kemp, which they denied.
As the Republicans vie for the Georgia seat, Ossoff has built a substantial campaign fund, giving him a fundraising edge as the general election nears.
Trump’s endorsement power has been evident in prior GOP primaries, though it faltered in an Iowa gubernatorial race where Rep. Randy Feenstra faced defeat. However, Trump-supported Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette triumphed in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary.
On a broader scale, Trump’s endorsements have shown mixed success, with Sen. Lindsey Graham securing a win in a Republican Senate primary, overcoming several challengers.
