The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Hebron officials celebrated the completion of a significant water main replacement project in the Snake Flats neighborhood on Wednesday. The project, valued at $4.5 million, aimed to improve the local water supply infrastructure.

Nihab Halilovic, an engineer from the Corps of Engineers’ Calumet Area Office, stated that the project was completed smoothly, adhering to the planned schedule and budget. Lt. Col. David Dawes, who leads the Corps’ Chicago District, noted the efficient collaboration among federal authorities, town officials, and contractors.

John Spinks Jr., President of the Town Council, expressed that the community of Snake Flats greatly deserved this update. The project commenced in April 2025 but encountered delays due to an unexpected frost, affecting road paving schedules.

This extensive project involved replacing nearly 9,000 feet of outdated water main with a larger pipe to ensure reliable water supply, stabilize pressure, and enhance local fire protection through the installation of ten fire hydrants. Additionally, 27 gate valves were put in, and a section of trail was constructed.

Unlike typical ribbon-cutting events, the completed infrastructure was not visible as it operates underground, serving the residents silently. Lt. Col. Dawes stressed that infrastructure projects are centered around improving public health and safety, which in turn supports community growth.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan was acknowledged for aiding communities in securing grants for projects like this. He emphasized the vital role infrastructure projects play in regional development, boosting clean water supply, fire safety, and growth potential.

Clerk-Treasurer Jamie Uzelac highlighted the importance of Mrvan’s team’s assistance in funding this long-planned project. Rising costs during the COVID-19 pandemic required the town to use a bond issue to meet financial demands. Uzelac, a resident of Snake Flats for decades, expressed relief at the infrastructure upgrade.

Linda Brebner, Park Board President and long-time local resident, also shared her satisfaction with the completion of the project, which addressed long-standing issues with the aged water system.
