Colombia’s presidential election saw a notable result as Abelardo de la Espriella, a candidate aligned with Donald Trump, emerged victorious in the first round. He faces Iván Cepeda, a senator with left-wing views, in a runoff scheduled for June 21.
De la Espriella, who is relatively new to politics, secured almost 44% of the vote. His opponent, Cepeda, received just under 41%, as reported by Colombian media. The election will head to a runoff since neither candidate achieved the 50% threshold.
Cepeda has the support of Colombia’s current president, Gustavo Petro, known for his leftist policies. Petro and Trump have often clashed publicly, particularly regarding the U.S.’s strike campaign aimed at drug boats, which resulted in over 200 casualties.
De la Espriella, an attorney with no prior political office in Colombia, aligns with right-wing figures like Argentina’s Javier Milei and El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele. He has expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the U.S. and focus on fighting organized crime.
The Trump administration views the Western Hemisphere, including Latin America, as a region of strategic importance for the U.S. This has involved assertive military actions south of the border, including a January operation that removed Nicolás Maduro from power in Venezuela to face U.S. charges.
The U.S. has conducted aggressive strikes over nine months targeting suspected drug-related activities in the southern Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Additionally, the military presence around Cuba has increased, coinciding with a pressure-building oil blockade and joint anti-drug operations with Ecuador.
Under the “Shield of the Americas” initiative, the Trump administration has created a coalition with like-minded center-right and hard-right leaders in Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim is to tackle issues such as illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and foreign influence.
