Bond Increase for Barry Morphew
A Colorado judge has decided to raise the bond for Barry Morphew, a murder suspect, following his arrest by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies last week. The bond has been increased to $10 million, cash only, from the previous $3 million.
In the court proceedings, the judge expressed concern about Morphew’s ability to commit new offenses while on bond. She stated that Morphew’s actions indicate a lack of respect for the court, suggesting he wouldn’t comply with its requirements if inconvenient to his desired lifestyle.
Details of the Arrest
Morphew appeared at the Alamosa County Court for a bond hearing on September 8, 2026. He was initially arrested on September 3 in unincorporated Boulder County due to an Alamosa County warrant for failure to comply. Boulder County deputies arrested him at around 9:11 p.m., taking him into custody without any incidents, and booked him into the county jail.
The arrest followed a verified application from prosecutors seeking a warrant and bond modification. The judge granted the application on September 3, issuing a bench warrant and setting bond at $3 million cash only, with nationwide extradition stipulated. A bond hearing was set for September 8, during which Morphew attended in person, bound and dressed in a white and orange striped ensemble. His bond was then raised to $10 million cash only.
Prosecutors’ Filing
In their filing, prosecutors highlighted that GPS data revealed Morphew’s departure from home on August 26, supposedly under a work exception to bond conditions. The data showed Morphew traveled to Denver International Airport instead. Although Morphew’s lawyers indicated he might have been picking up his daughter, prosecutors contended that the trip breached his release terms, viewing it as evidence of an extreme flight risk.
Additionally, GPS and video data demonstrated Morphew’s movement from home to the airport around 10 a.m., arriving there by 11:45 a.m. and subsequently leaving. During his time in Denver, Morphew visited several locations, including a steakhouse, Whole Foods, and a liquor store, as per his GPS data. His visitations extended to areas near hotels and malls before traveling to East 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.
Hit-and-Run Incident and Further Investigation
In the same area, Morphew was involved in a hit-and-run incident first reported by CBS Colorado. Video footage obtained by CBS Colorado captured Morphew’s encounter after a crash near 8th and Colorado. The driver, identified as Morphew, declined to present identification or insurance details, offering cash and then departing the scene.
New court records reveal that prosecutors reviewed his GPS data from the incident day while investigating potential violations of his release conditions. Morphew awaits trial on charges of first-degree murder after deliberation in relation to his wife, Suzanne Morphew’s death. He maintains his plea of not guilty, denying any involvement in her murder.
