Concerns of Antisemitism in Politics Among Jewish Democrats

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., discussed the issue of antisemitism within the Democratic Party in an interview with CNN. She highlighted an incident where a fellow Democratic colleague dismissed antisemitism by suggesting that ‘all the Jews are rich.’ This remark is among the troubling examples Jewish Democratic politicians face, indicating an increase in antisemitism even among their peers.

Balint expressed her dismay when witnessing California state Sen. Scott Wiener being heckled by anti-Israel activists. She mentioned feeling ‘shaken to [her] core’ by the aggressive backlash Wiener received for his support of Israel.

Balint shared her concerns, stating, ‘I know at some point there will be a day of reckoning because I still believe that Jews should have a homeland.’ Despite being aligned with progressive causes, she faces potential alienation due to her support for Israel’s security and a two-state solution.

Other Jewish Democrats also voiced similar concerns about the political climate. New York City comptroller Mark Levine noted that Israel has become a political ‘litmus test,’ affecting how Jewish Democrats engage with broader progressive movements. Levine remarked, ‘It’s hard to conclude it’s not because we’re Jewish.’

Michigan state Rep. Noah Arbit criticized how antisemitism is masked as criticism of Israel. He expressed doubts about remaining affiliated with the Democratic Party, stating, ‘I don’t know how Jews can feel like you can align yourself with any political movement when the grassroots are so hostile to who you are and your community.’

These sentiments reflect a broader concern among Jewish Democrats who feel marginalized due to their faith and support for Israel amid rising antisemitism.
