Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs is confronting legal issues following his domestic abuse arrest in May. Charged by the Brown County (Wisconsin) District Attorney, Jacobs faces potential penalties including a $20,000 fine or up to 18 months of imprisonment.
Court records reveal Jacobs has been charged with misdemeanor counts of battery and criminal damage to property. These charges could result in a nine-month jail sentence each if he is found guilty. These formal charges by District Attorney David L. Lasee were issued three months post Jacobs’ arrest after a domestic altercation near Green Bay.
Initially booked on charges of felony strangulation/suffocation along with various domestic-abuse charges, Jacobs now faces reduced charges after an extensive investigation by Lasee’s office. The DA’s statement clarified that, “A criminal complaint is nothing more than a written, formal accusation against a defendant alleging the commission of criminal offenses and does not raise any inference of guilt.” Jacobs is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Jacobs’ representation, attorneys David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld, and Clarence F. Duchac III, responded to the new charges with a statement welcoming the decision to file lesser charges. “The Brown County District Attorney has reviewed evidence and elected to file misdemeanor charges against Josh that do not include domestic violence,” the statement read.
The NFL has been following Jacobs’ case since his arrest and will continue to monitor developments. Under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, the NFL may discipline Jacobs independent of the legal outcomes. This policy considers the negative impact of incidents on the league’s public image.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged the team’s preparedness for any situation arising from this case, including potential suspension. As Jacobs remains under scrutiny, concerns exist about the team’s depth at the running back position due to MarShawn Lloyd’s limited experience and performance, alongside other available players Pierre Strong, Jr., and Chris Brooks.
The circumstances could prompt the Packers to consider additional options for their running back lineup if Jacobs faces extended suspension.
