Concerns Rise Over Kratom Usage After Tragic Student Deaths

5 days ago 0

The recent deaths of two students from the University of Mississippi have ignited concerns about the possible health risks associated with kratom. Both students passed away on Monday in separate locations on campus. Packaged kratom, sourced from a retail store, was found during the investigation, as noted in a news release from the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics shared by the Oxford Police Department. Authorities have not yet confirmed kratom’s involvement in the students’ deaths.

Kratom Risks and Effects

Kratom is a plant-based substance often marketed as a natural solution for pain relief or managing opioid withdrawal. Experts caution that it can lead to dependence, dangerous interactions, and other severe health issues. At low doses, kratom acts as a stimulant, which can result in heart arrhythmia. However, at high doses, it resembles an opioid and can suppress breathing, according to Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst at Fox News Digital.

Jessica Steinman, chief clinical officer at No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, noted kratom’s widespread availability. It is sold in various locations including storefronts, gas stations, smoke shops, and health food stores. Often marketed as an energy booster, people may misuse it by consuming large amounts.

Potential Addiction and Interaction Dangers

Steinman warns of kratom’s addictive potential, stressing its impact on opioid receptors in the brain. Users can become overly sedated, which affects breathing and lung function. The danger increases when kratom is mixed with substances like alcohol, marijuana, or benzodiazepines. This combination can be fatal.

Symptoms requiring medical attention include slow, shallow breathing and excessive drowsiness. Steinman emphasizes prompt medical care in such situations. Regular kratom use followed by abrupt cessation may result in withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, requiring emergency medical care.

Kratom Use Among College Students

The substance’s appeal among college students is notable. Steinman suggests students may use kratom for its stimulant effects to stay awake and focus on academics or for its opioid-like effects to cope with stress and anxiety. Despite its natural origin, Steinman stresses that kratom is not inherently safe, highlighting its addictive potential due to its effect on the brain’s opioid receptors.

Industry Concerns and Regulatory Attention

Dallas Vasquez, CEO of Mitra9 Brands, explains the distinction between traditional botanical kratom products and those with enhanced or synthetic 7-OH compounds. Such products are under scrutiny by federal regulators due to their concentrated effects. Mitra9 brands are derived from natural leaf extract and avoid isolated or synthetic 7-OH.

Vasquez clarifies that their products, intended for adults 21 and older, include careful labeling and precautionary statements, such as avoiding use during pregnancy and consulting a physician when managing health conditions. Every report of harm is taken seriously, and there is support for stronger testing, labeling, and restrictions in the kratom market.

The examination of kratom products is ongoing, with a focus on transparency and consumer protection to ensure safe consumption practices.
