Controversial officiating isn’t confined to the NFL or the NBA. The Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther at Clash in Italy faced scrutiny over a referee decision.
During the event held at Inalpi Arena in Torino di Sangro, Italy, on May 31, 2026, referee Dan Engler’s oversight became the focal point. As Cody Rhodes delivered a second Cross Rhodes to Gunther, the move left Gunther near the ropes. Rhodes attempted a pin, and Engler began the count.
Footage revealed Gunther’s foot was under the ropes, a factor that should have interrupted the count. However, Engler, focused on Rhodes’ pin, did not notice Gunther’s foot placement. This allowed Rhodes to secure the victory, keeping Gunther’s shoulders down for the three-count.
Stunned by the decision, Gunther, known as “The Ring General,” protested by signaling to Engler about the oversight. Meanwhile, Rhodes celebrated his win with attendees in Turin, marking his second successful title defense since defeating Drew McIntyre earlier.
Gunther’s journey to this title match began with a victory over Royce Keys two weeks prior. Initially hesitant to sign the match contract, he conceded before losing his opportunity to Keys. Following the outcome, Gunther expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out Rhodes’ tendency to dominate “Friday Night SmackDown.” With a valid complaint concerning the match’s resolution, Gunther’s path to another title opportunity remains uncertain.
The situation leaves wrestling fans questioning how soon Gunther might receive another chance at the championship.
