Last Friday, the San Francisco Giants hosted what was intended to be a celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride at Oracle Park, yet the event led to significant controversy. The game against the Chicago Cubs was designated as “Pride Night,” and players received special Pride caps to wear.
Most players donned these caps, yet pitcher Sam Hentges chose not to participate. Additionally, three pitchers, including Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker, inscribed Bible verses on their Pride hats. This decision has sparked a strong reaction from the community.
Arne Johnson, a devoted Giants fan and parent of two LGBTQ children, expressed his disappointment. He questioned whether fans, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community, would feel welcome supporting certain players. Johnson, who is active in Rainbow Families Action, a group supporting transgender and non-binary youth, found the players’ actions hurtful.
“One night a year, we asked for the players to cheer for our children, and they couldn’t even manage that. To me, that is deeply offensive, and it’s something that nobody in the Bay Area should tolerate,” Johnson stated.
The Giants issued a statement acknowledging the impact of the players’ choices. They reiterated their commitment to inclusion and creating a welcoming environment for all. However, members of Rainbow Families Action found the statement lacking. They suggested fans consider supporting organizations and teams that fully embrace LGBTQ fans.
Johnson emphasized the need for corrective action by the Giants, including meetings with families and the LGBTQ community, and significant efforts towards healing the situation.
At the time of writing, no response had been received from Major League Baseball regarding the Bible inscriptions on the hats, which violate league rules.
