Controversy Surrounding Hasan Piker’s Comments on Hamas

Far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker faced criticism during a CNN interview for downplaying the anti-women and anti-LGBTQ positions of Hamas. This discussion arose during Piker’s appearance in ‘The Left Insurgency,’ part of the documentary series ‘The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper.’ Reporter Donie O’Sullivan highlighted Piker’s controversial remarks and his perceived support for the terrorist organization.

Piker addressed a bipartisan House resolution that condemned his previous statements. He clarified that while he does not support all actions of Hamas, he believes in the right of Palestinian resistance, which sometimes involves violations, including those committed by Hamas.

“I wouldn’t say I express support for all of Hamas’s actions or anything,” Piker said, referencing the resolution. “I do say Palestinians have a right to resist. Do they violate that sometimes? Absolutely.”

The resolution cited Piker calling Hamas “a thousand times better than the fascist settler colonial apartheid state” of Israel. He reiterated this sentiment in appearances on platforms like ‘Pod Save America,’ explaining his position as a ‘harm-reduction voter.’

“I’m a lesser-evil voter,” Piker stated. “I would vote for Hamas over Israel because of the oppressive Israeli occupation.”

O’Sullivan challenged Piker, pointing out that supporting Hamas implies endorsing human rights violations. Piker countered by saying his statements are not endorsing Hamas’s domestic policies, which he believes are not the main concern for Palestinians.

“The Israeli occupation is the greatest problem,” Piker argued. “It’s an existential issue for Palestinians.”

Despite reaching out, Fox News did not receive an immediate response from Piker. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) criticized his comments, emphasizing that Piker’s position supports a designated terrorist organization. The ADL expressed concern over silence from Democratic officials on this issue.

An ADL spokesperson stated, “Hasan Piker expresses support for Hamas, and Democratic officials remain silent. That silence has a cost.”

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) also condemned Piker’s statements, underscoring the danger of normalizing such rhetoric. They urged leaders to exercise responsibility in elevating voices and signal intolerance for harmful rhetoric.

“Support for a terrorist organization is not a political viewpoint to be debated,” AJC wrote. “It risks normalizing extremism and endangering the Jewish community.”

Piker, who identifies as a socialist, has been active in supporting democratic socialist candidates. Despite emerging as a prominent leftist voice, his past controversial comments, including a claim that “America deserved 9/11” in 2019, have drawn widespread criticism.

Some, like Democratic strategist James Carville, have distanced themselves from Piker. Carville indicated his willingness to leave the Democratic Party if it continues to embrace Piker’s influence.

“Hasan Piker and I won’t be in the same political party,” Carville remarked. “One of us will leave.”
