President Trump recently spoke from the Cross Hall of the White House, as seen on a TV monitor in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. Just days after banning reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, his administration launched a 24/7 YouTube channel. This channel, called ‘Trump TV,’ aims to feature the administration’s ‘biggest moments all in one place.’
The launch has sparked backlash from press-freedom advocates and Democratic lawmakers. Critics have dubbed it ‘state-run media.’ The channel opened with Trump’s July 3 speech at Mt. Rushmore, where he blamed ‘newcomers to our country’ for a resurgence of communism.
The decision to bar certain media outlets was announced on Trump’s Truth Social site, where he accused them of spreading ‘FICTION and LIES.’ In response, the three affected media organizations filed a federal lawsuit, claiming the ban violates their First Amendment rights and due process under the Fifth Amendment.
Major news networks, including Fox News, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, and CNN, defended their role in informing the public. They criticized the administration’s actions and emphasized the importance of independent media.
In protest, some media outlets have halted audio and video coverage from White House events. However, coverage of Trump by other sources continues. Democratic figures such as Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have called the new channel autocratic.
Stephen Farnsworth, a political science professor, notes that Trump has consistently sought to control his narrative. ‘Trump TV’ may struggle to attract viewers beyond his base.
Jane Kirtley, an emerita professor of media ethics and law, expressed concern over government-controlled media. She sees the ban and launch of ‘Trump TV’ as deliberate, questioning the timing.
Farnsworth adds that the Trump administration’s efforts to shape the narrative in its favor are clear. This endeavor appears as another attempt to dominate how the presidency is portrayed.
