Controversy Surrounds Michigan Football’s Win Over Western Michigan

3 weeks ago 0

For a brief moment, Western Michigan Broncos seemed poised to pull off a major upset against the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium. The Wolverines, heavily favored, faced an unexpected challenge when the Broncos took a 12-7 lead with just 38 seconds left and Michigan out of timeouts.

The game appeared to conclude when Michigan’s Bryce Underwood attempted a Hail Mary that landed out of the endzone, with the clock showing 0:00. However, a review added one second back to the clock, allowing Underwood a second chance. JJ Buchanan caught the game-winning touchdown, leading to Wolverines fans storming the field.

Outside Michigan, confusion and anger followed. The Big Ten’s review explanation offered little clarity, stating that a clock used during replay indicated an extra second, despite synced cameras showing none.

The controversy escalated when the Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced an appeal to the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff. They requested recognition of Western Michigan as the true winners, citing violations in replay protocols. The MAC argued that the replay crew’s reliance on the embedded clock instead of the program feed clock invalidated the final play.

“The MAC is requesting recognition of Western Michigan as the actual winner, for purposes of rankings, evaluations, and selections,” stated the MAC.

The NCAA rule book indicates that “televised production” should be evaluated during reviews. The MAC’s appeal finds grounding here, yet the likelihood of overturning the result remains slim. FBS committees rarely reverse decisions made on the field.

Supporting Western Michigan, the MAC stood firm, disputing the result’s fairness. The upset victory could have positioned Western Michigan for a College Football Playoff berth.

In response, the Big Ten reiterated its confidence in the original review decision, stating, “The Big Ten stands by the statement released, with no further comment.” The parties involved remain divided, leaving the controversy unresolved.
