Controversy Surrounds Sentencing of Illegal Immigrant in Fatal California Truck Crash

Trump administration officials and conservatives have expressed outrage over the sentencing of an illegal immigrant trucker. The trucker, involved in a fatal California semi-truck collision that killed three people, received a prison sentence of less than five years.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the sentencing, describing it as a “slap on the wrist.” He stated that his agency is committed to ensuring that “ALL illegal alien truckers are put out of business and held accountable.” The Department of Homeland Security announced that immigration officials are prepared to arrest the trucker upon release, ensuring he never drives on U.S. roads again.

The trucker, Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, was identified by federal authorities as being in the United States illegally. He was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. The charges stem from an October 2025 crash on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County, California. Singh’s semitruck collided with slow-moving traffic, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. Dashcam footage revealed that Singh did not apply the brakes before the impact.

“This is a wildly insufficient punishment for a foreign national, in our country illegally, who killed 3 people with a truck,” stated Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

Senator Mike Lee and others have argued that the sentencing doesn’t reflect the gravity of the offense. DHS emphasized that individuals like Singh should not be allowed to operate vehicles on American roads. They have plans to apprehend Singh immediately after his prison term ends.

Transportation Secretary Duffy further highlighted that illegal immigrants obtaining commercial driver’s licenses poses significant safety risks. He noted instances of widespread fraud enabling illegal immigrants to secure these licenses. Singh had crossed the U.S. southern border in March 2022, with a commercial driver’s license issued in California by June 2025.

Federal officials had previously advised California to address compliance issues regarding commercial driver’s licenses. They directed a halt on issuing new licenses to non-citizens and called for a review of current licenses for federal compliance. Singh’s licensure was said to align with federally authorized employment documents, which California officials defended.

During a debate among California gubernatorial candidates, Democrat hopefuls opposed the Trump administration’s proposal for Californian police to administer English proficiency tests to truck drivers. Businessman Tom Steyer argued that such measures were discriminatory. Debate moderators presented a clip of former Biden administration Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Beccera opposing language tests, emphasizing existing state laws against racial profiling.

Former Republican candidate for governor, Sheriff Chad Bianco, criticized Democratic opponents for suggesting that such policies were racially motivated. He insisted on the need for law enforcement to focus solely on the legality of actions without distractions of race, emphasizing accountability.
