Craig Carton has criticized Michigan Wolverines fans for celebrating their narrow win over the Western Michigan Broncos. The game saw Michigan secure a 13-12 victory, needing a controversial second chance at a Hail Mary play. Bryce Underwood was given an unforeseen second opportunity to throw, leading to a touchdown pass to J.J. Buchanan.
Carton, on his upcoming Craig Carton Show, expressed disbelief at the celebration that followed. “The hubris of adding a second to the game and allowing Michigan another chance to win was eclipsed only by the reaction of 110,000 fans storming the field,” Carton commented, suggesting that such behavior is more fitting for teams upsetting bigger opponents, rather than a favored Michigan team.
“Even though Michigan is considered a top educational institution, Saturday night was a reminder that its fans behaved foolishly,” Carton stated.
Carton elaborated on his view of Michigan’s athletic program as corrupt, citing practices like sign-stealing and other unethical behaviors. He criticized Michigan fans for their field-storming antics, especially since they barely edged out a team from the Mid-American Conference.
The commentator stressed that Western Michigan, part of the MAC since 1962, had never beaten a top-20 ranked opponent, making Michigan’s celebration appear unwarranted. Carton deemed the game a potential warning for the rest of Michigan’s season.
Looking ahead, Michigan must address questions about Underwood’s role as QB1 before their next game against Oklahoma. In the wake of this incident, both the Big Ten and the Mid-American Conference have made statements acknowledging the controversial call.
For now, fans and players alike must refocus as the game against Oklahoma looms. Carton’s candid opinions reflect a broader skepticism about the current state of Michigan football.
