Crisis in Paris Schools: Sexual Abuse Allegations Emerge

1 month ago 0

A 36-year-old man, known in French media as David G., stands accused of sexually assaulting eight children in Paris schools. He is among over 70 school employees recently suspended or terminated for allegations of sexual misconduct.

The charges against David G. are part of a yearlong crisis impacting approximately 130 schools, kindergartens, and nurseries in the French capital. He was working as nonteaching staff at the Alphonse Baudin school, a kindergarten in central Paris, and was suspended last April following parental complaints. Arrested in June, David G. denies the charges, claiming he should have been more cautious around children.

Looking back now, I realize I should have been more careful around children, kept my distance, played with them less, and held them on my lap less often.

Parents noted changes in their children’s behavior, prompting the school director to alert authorities. The Paris prosecutor’s office highlighted that David G. also faces allegations of assaulting or harassing two adult colleagues. At this time, neither the school’s leadership nor the education ministry has commented publicly due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

David G.’s trial underscores a serious concern within the Paris school system, as multiple nonteaching staff face similar allegations. The crisis has led to distrust in the school system and poses a significant challenge for Paris’s new mayor, Emmanuel Grégoire. Rebecca Royer, representing six of the victims’ families, emphasizes the importance of this trial in promoting child protection.

The French education system employs two separate recruitment processes. Teachers, hired by the national Education Ministry, manage educational activities. Meanwhile, nonteaching staff, employed by city authorities, supervise recess, lunch, and after-school activities. Such distinctions have come under scrutiny amidst the current allegations.
