The Chicago Cubs found their missing power in a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies to prevent a series sweep at Coors Field. Alex Bregman managed a two-run homer in the seventh, one of four extra-base hits that propelled the Cubs back over .500.
Seiya Suzuki initiated the scoring with a grand slam in the fourth inning, delivering the blow off a slider from Rockies starter Ryan Feltner. This put the Cubs ahead 4-1. Two more runs came in the fifth, and catcher Carson Kelly sealed the game with a solo home run in the eighth.
Bregman, not yet fully content with his performance, noted opportunities he missed earlier in the game. “The whole series was better,” Bregman said. “Still missed too many pitches in the heart of the plate.” Despite the homer being his sixth this season and first with a runner on base, Bregman felt room for improvement.
The Cubs hadn’t hit three homers in one game since April 25. Their nine runs marked the end of a five-game streak of scoring three or fewer runs, tying their longest such streak of the year.
Pitcher Edward Cabrera contributed with solid innings, allowing only two runs via solo homers. Manager Craig Counsell praised the team’s talent but recognized the challenges. “Our players are the source of the optimism,” he said. “We have very talented, good players, and that absolutely creates optimism.”
Suzuki’s shot also extended his hitting streak to eight games. “There’s more sort of frustration that I had towards myself,” he shared through his interpreter, Edwin Stanberry, after his grand slam. Throughout this streak, he maintained a .308/.379/.654 slash line with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Bregman has been showing signs of improvement, reaching base in 31 of his last 35 games since May 3, with a .327 on-base percentage. After the game, he said, “Happy to contribute to help our team win. We’ve got a lot of work to do and we’ve got to be better.” Winning the next game could mean a winning streak for the Cubs.
