Current Developments in Iran Conflict: Hormuz, Houthi Attacks, and U.S. Blockade Enforcement

Strait of Hormuz Traffic Decline

The number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz has decreased significantly, reaching a one-week low of eight ships, as reported by Reuters. This drop in traffic is attributed to the ongoing conflict, discouraging shipping companies from using this vital route. Data from August 5 showed a daily count of 12 vessels, while prior to the conflict beginning on February 28, approximately 130 ships traversed the waterway each day.

Houthi Attacks Increase Tensions

The recent attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea led to the death of six individuals on a cargo vessel. These are the first known fatalities due to Houthi attacks on shipping amidst the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The incident occurred in the Bab el-Mandeb strait as Houthis targeted government-held areas like the port city of Mokha, resulting in numerous casualties among government troops and civilians.

These events signify an escalation in the war by the Houthis, targeting government forces and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. This escalation poses a risk of reigniting Yemen’s civil war despite a truce reached in 2022. Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdul-Salam accused Saudi Arabia of exploiting the ceasefire to reinforce an existing air and sea blockade. The Houthis express willingness to negotiate but demand the lifting of the blockade as a condition for any settlement.

U.S. Action Against Blockade Violators

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), an American military helicopter targeted a Panama-flagged ship that attempted to break the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. A U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired Hellfire missiles into the engine room of the vessel, Vela Nova, after the crew ignored repeated warnings from U.S. forces in the Gulf of Oman. No casualties have been reported thus far.

CENTCOM has confirmed that the blockade remains intact and cited its actions, which include disabling three non-compliant vessels, boarding two others, and redirecting 55 commercial vessels that attempted to breach the blockade since the enforcement began.
