Cyclospora Outbreak Affects Consumer Behavior Across the U.S.

A Cyclospora outbreak, traced to recalled iceberg lettuce, is causing shifts in consumer habits nationwide. Food safety concerns are leading many Americans to reduce their fresh produce purchases. A CBS News/YouGov poll reveals that 40 percent of Americans are buying or consuming less produce due to the outbreak, while only 4 percent are purchasing more. This highlights the public anxiety surrounding the issue as federal health officials investigate multiple clusters of the intestinal illness and advise against consuming recalled products.

The primary outbreak has been associated with iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms. A CDC update on July 24 reported that the contamination affected at least 1,947 people across nine states, resulting in 98 hospitalizations and no deaths. The CDC is also examining other unrelated Cyclospora outbreaks nationwide.

Consumer Behavior Shifts Amidst Outbreak

The CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted from July 22 to July 24, involved 2,193 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points. It shows widespread awareness of the health crisis:

  • 61 percent are following the Cyclospora news at least somewhat closely.
  • 40 percent have reduced their fresh produce consumption or purchases.
  • 56 percent report no change in their purchasing habits.
  • 4 percent are buying or eating more produce.

Confidence in the FDA, responsible for food safety, is mixed. Only 13 percent of respondents expressed a high level of confidence in the agency, while 40 percent expressed some confidence. Nearly half (47 percent) have little to no confidence in the FDA’s food safety management.

Outbreak and Recall Measures

The outbreak is centered on iceberg lettuce from central Mexico distributed by Taylor Farms, which issued a voluntary recall on July 17. States affected include Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Taylor Farms reported no positive Cyclospora tests as of July 24, although they removed implicated products and paused all iceberg lettuce sourcing and production from the region as a precaution.

According to the CDC, since May 1, 4,173 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis have been recorded, with over 7,400 additional suspected cases requiring further analysis.

About Cyclospora

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite, specifically Cyclospora cayetanensis, that infects the small intestine, causing cyclosporiasis.

  • Transmission: Infection typically occurs through consuming food or water contaminated with fecal matter. Fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, and fruits, often serves as a transmission vector when exposed to poor sanitation.
  • Contagion: Cyclospora does not spread directly from person to person as the parasite needs time in the environment to mature before becoming infectious.
  • Symptoms: Symptoms include watery diarrhea, appetite loss, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting and low-grade fever may also occur, typically starting 2-14 days post-exposure.
  • Treatment: Healthy individuals usually recover with antibiotics, but untreated infections may last for weeks or months.

Taylor Farms’ Response and CDC Advice

Taylor Farms quickly addressed the outbreak concerns by recalling all lettuce products and halting iceberg lettuce operations from central Mexico. A Taylor Farms representative emphasized the importance of food safety and detailed the company’s protocols and ongoing investigations.

The CDC advises consumers to:

  • Check refrigerators for recalled Taylor Farms lettuce and dispose of or return it.
  • Clean surfaces, cutting boards, and utensils with hot soapy water or a dishwasher if they might have come into contact with the lettuce.
  • Seek medical attention for prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms after consuming fresh produce.
