On April 16, 2014, members of the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy participated in a parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. However, following the recent health incident, the academy closed temporarily as a precautionary measure.

One concerned mother informed FOX 5 that hospital tests indicated her son had elevated carbon monoxide levels, though he exhibited symptoms like dizziness, headaches, and nausea after other cadets had already sought treatment. Despite this, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department conducted an investigation and found no elevated carbon monoxide levels at the site.

Doctors have warned that what might seem like a regular stomach issue could, in fact, be harder-to-detect parasites. While the exact cause of the cadets’ illness remains unconfirmed, officials speculate it might relate to food consumption.

The DC National Guard is focused on the health and safety of the cadets and staff, coordinating with emergency medical teams and public health authorities to advance the investigation. Also noted was a single adult who was evaluated and chose not to receive additional medical care.
