The Dallas Cowboys have taken significant steps to strengthen their defensive line. After Micah Parsons’ departure last year, the team sought veteran support and signed Von Miller to a one-year contract worth up to $7.5 million.
According to Todd Archer from ESPN, the signing of Miller influenced the decision to release Sam Williams, who had initially joined on a one-year deal with $2 million guaranteed. Archer shared, “Sources: The Cowboys have released veteran edge rusher Sam Williams, who signed a one-year deal with $2 million guaranteed in March. Von Miller addition took away an edge rusher spot on the 53.”
Williams, selected in the second round by Dallas in 2022, contributed notably to the team. His stats include 85 tackles, three forced fumbles, 22 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks during his tenure. In the 2025 season, he played in 17 games and started in five.
Williams faced pressure during training camp to secure his spot on the 53-man roster. “I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything,” Williams expressed. “And I took it in and I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong. So everything that I’ve seen, I try to fix. Like even in my room, it’s written on the mirror.”
The edge rusher’s peak performance season came in 2023 with 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Unfortunately, Williams was sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a serious knee injury during training camp.
As the NFL regular season approaches, it remains crucial to observe whether other teams will show interest in Williams. His potential might attract franchises aiming to bolster their defensive ends.
