Forecasters are warning that temperatures could potentially break records in some regions. The heat is anticipated to extend into the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
This week, a dangerous and enduring heat wave is predicted to develop across central and eastern parts of the United States. Temperatures might reach the triple digits, breaking previous records, especially during the holiday weekend from the Midwest to the East Coast.
Marc Chenard, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center, stated that temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s to low 100s. Parts of the East, particularly the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, could experience temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
“Washington, D.C., will almost certainly exceed 100 on at least one or two days,” stated Mr. Chenard. “Philadelphia and New York City are also forecasted to have temperatures above 100.”
Daily records could be surpassed on Thursday and Friday in Washington, New York City, and Philadelphia, with Philadelphia potentially matching its record high of 104 degrees for June.
The heat wave is expected to start on Sunday in portions of the Plains, where temperatures will climb into the 90s. By Tuesday, the heat will extend beyond the Great Lakes region to the Gulf Coast. By Wednesday, the East Coast will likely experience extreme heat.
High humidity will accompany the elevated temperatures, exacerbating the discomfort felt by residents. The National Weather Service warned that heat index values could reach up to 110 degrees, and locally up to 115 degrees.
Nights offer little reprieve, with temperatures expected to stay unusually high, particularly in the East, where some cities might have record-high lows.
“Cities like New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., might not see temperatures dip below 80 for one or two nights,” Mr. Chenard remarked.
The oppressive heat is forecasted to continue through much of the Fourth of July weekend, propelled by a “pretty persistent” heat dome or large area of high pressure.
Toward the end of the holiday weekend, this heat dome could shift westward, bringing cooler conditions to the East and a chance of thunderstorms.
