Darline Graham Enters Political Scene After Lindsey Graham’s Passing

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Senator Darline Graham officially launched her political journey in front of hundreds of Republican voters in South Carolina. She announced that her path to politics emerged following the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham. Now, she aims to advance the state and support President Donald Trump’s policies.

Darline Graham serves in an interim capacity to complete her brother’s term. However, she is among nine Republicans competing to permanently take the position in a special primary election scheduled for August 11. Although new to the political arena, she argued that her understanding of federal policy debates, like budgeting and healthcare, aligns with her brother’s expertise. She emphasized that, just like her brother, she has Trump’s endorsement. Consequently, she decided to join the race at Trump’s urging.

“I certainly never expected to be on this stage, giving this stump speech,” Darline Graham told the audience in Lexington. “I’ve never had any desire to be a politician. I’m here today because I’m answering President Trump’s call to serve. I want to stand up for South Carolina, and I want to fight for President Trump’s agenda.”

Her unexpected entry into politics came three weeks after Lindsey Graham’s sudden death due to an aortic tear. With limited time before the special election, she aims to convince South Carolina Republicans of her candidacy’s merit. Until this point, state voters associated her mainly with her brother’s past and their shared challenging upbringing.

All nine candidates appeared at Saturday’s event, each having five minutes to address the crowd. Former Governor Mark Sanford, seeking another political comeback, cautioned against deficit spending. He highlighted endorsements from Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee and Representative Ralph Norman, who promoted the SAVE America Act, one of Trump’s policy focuses.

Representative Russell Fry shared his personal story of a humble background and commitment to faith and hard work. After the speeches, attendees enjoyed Chick-fil-A boxed lunches and participated in an informal straw poll. Darline Graham narrowly won this straw poll over Fry and Norman.

Some attendees, like Charles Brentnell, expressed the need for more information and time to decide on a candidate. His top choices include Ralph Norman, Russell Fry, and Darline Graham, supporting Trump’s stance on legislative urgency.

Gary Atkinson, contemplating his decision, leaned towards Norman but acknowledged the strong field of candidates and reminisced on his past support for Lindsey Graham.

If required, a runoff election is set for August 25. The chosen Republican nominee will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election. Other candidates at the Lexington event included Walterboro attorney Duke Buckner, Greenville businessman Mark Lynch, former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride, retired Air Force officer Glenda Gail Parker, and entrepreneur Sam Shepherd.
