Deb Haaland Discusses Her New Memoir ‘A Voice Like Mine’

Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has released her memoir titled A Voice Like Mine. In this memoir, she reflects on her journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the first Native American women elected to Congress and the first Native American cabinet secretary in U.S. history.

Her Background and Achievements

Haaland’s roots trace back to the Pueblo Indians, the original inhabitants of New Mexico and parts of the Southwest. Her family history is rich with significant achievements. In 2018, she made history by becoming one of the first two Native American women in Congress. Subsequently, President Joe Biden appointed her as the Secretary of the Interior, marking another historic first. She now aims to become the first Native American woman to be elected governor of a U.S. state.

A Life of Service

Raised by parents who were civil servants, Haaland was inspired by her father’s career as a Marine and her mother’s work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Despite her upbringing, the decision to enter public service was her own. She emphasizes the importance of empowering others to pursue public office and be part of decision-making processes.

“We have more of a voice than we’ve ever had, but the struggle is real,” Haaland stated. “That’s why I’m saying we need more voices at the table. We need more voices at the decision-making table.”

Reflecting on Citizenship

As the United States commemorates its 250th year of independence, Haaland highlights concerns about how citizens treat one another. She stresses the importance of shared responsibility to care for people and the environment.
