Debate Heats up in New York Gubernatorial Race

52 minutes ago 0

The New York gubernatorial race became intense as Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman sparred in a debate. They exchanged words over issues involving President Donald Trump, a recent ICE-related shooting, and inflation.

ICE Action Sparks Debate

At the start, candidates addressed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s actions. Recently, ICE faced criticism in New York City following the shooting of a 28-year-old Dominican national. The Department of Homeland Security stated the individual resisted lawful orders during a targeted operation in the Bronx. Despite a 5-year-old in the vehicle, the child was unharmed.

Blakeman criticized Hochul, saying she supported ICE releasing a criminal. He questioned why the person was in New York, citing it as evidence of Hochul making New York a sanctuary state. Blakeman detailed his county’s cooperation with ICE, highlighting the removal of over 2,000 illegal migrants with criminal records. He argued this cooperation contributed to community safety.

Hochul Defends Stance on ICE

Hochul labeled Blakeman’s response a “non-answer” for not condemning ICE’s actions. She criticized the notion of ICE agents firing into vehicles, risking lives, questioning Blakeman’s acceptance of such conduct. Hochul oversees over 500 policing agencies in New York, clarifying that ICE’s actions were excessive and unacceptable.

Blakeman blamed Hochul’s “sanctuary policy” for inviting criminals into the state and hindering local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with ICE. He claimed that under his leadership, cooperation with ICE avoided incidents, unlike the current situation.

Rebutting Blakeman, Hochul firmly denied New York being a sanctuary for criminals, emphasizing a full stop on the matter.

Debate Shifts to Trump and Economy

The conversation shifted to Trump and the U.S. economy. Hochul accused Trump of failing to deliver on energy and grocery cost reductions, attributing rising costs to policies supported by Blakeman. She pointed to high gasoline prices and tariffs affecting consumer goods as evidence of such failures.

Blakeman deflected, suggesting Hochul preferred discussing Trump over her record. He maintained ties with Trump, who endorsed him, alongside Democrats like Bonnie Lautenberg and actor Debra Messing, who support him for safety and life quality improvements in New York.

Hochul sarcastically acknowledged Blakeman’s support, emphasizing the political dynamics in play.

Greg Norman, a reporter at Fox News Digital, provided coverage of the debate.
