Alyssa Farah Griffin, co-host of “The View,” criticized the Democratic Party for the “botched” vetting process of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Platner is currently facing several scandals, including allegations of sexual abuse. During the show, co-host Sunny Hostin expressed that Platner should withdraw from the race, emphasizing the importance of Democrats gaining control of the Senate.
Griffin remarked on the Democrats’ failure to properly vet Platner, who was seen as a key candidate for flipping a Senate seat in Maine. She pointed out that the party had six years to recruit against Susan Collins and to thoroughly investigate candidates, but failed to do so. Griffin compared this to the Republicans’ nomination of Ken Paxton in Texas, noting that both parties have issues with candidate selection but emphasized the high stakes in Maine.
I think that a lot of people who are making a lot of money around him knew. There were whispers, now there’s reports, but that he had issues with women and people kept saying, ‘No, no, no, look away,’
Whoopi Goldberg joined the conversation, suggesting that people were aware of Platner’s controversies, but still chose to support him. She mentioned that despite knowing candidates’ flaws, people often vote for them anyway. The hosts discussed how character vetting seemed insufficient within the political parties.
During earlier debates on the show, Hostin criticized Platner as being racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic. Despite her critique, Hostin admitted she might have voted for him if she were a Maine voter, owing to the political climate. She argued that Republicans cannot claim moral superiority, stating that the Republican Party’s standards are low and that they prefer to align rather than to love, unlike Democrats who seek idealism.
The hosts collectively agreed that given the new allegations, Platner should step down from the race.
