Matt Gogel, a golfer part of the PGA Tour Champions, faces a six-month suspension for placing bets on PGA Tour events. He clarified through his statement that his bets were “small recreational wagers on golf” in 2024, without intentional wrongdoing.
Clarification from Gogel
Gogel emphasized that the bets did not involve regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events, or any tournament where he participated. He stated, “I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake and look forward to playing in 2027.” His suspension is effective from Sunday and will last until February 22, 2027.
The PGA Tour’s integrity program prohibits wagering on PGA-sanctioned events.
Previous Suspensions
Gogel is not the first to face suspension for betting. In 2023, Korn Ferry Tour players Vince India and Jake Staiano were suspended for similar violations. Gogel, aged 55, has one career victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002. Post-retirement from the main tour, he became a broadcaster for The Golf Channel and CBS Sports.
Career Shift and Status
Joining the PGA Tour Champions when he turned 50, Gogel now ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points race. He plans to return to competitive play in 2027.
