Debate Over ‘Vertical Drinking’ in London’s Pubs

The proposal to limit ‘vertical drinking’ in London’s West End has caused significant political controversy. The term refers to having a drink while standing, and the idea has met with criticism from various officials.

Westminster City Council, responsible for licensing in this vibrant area, initiated this proposal. The area is known for bustling pubs where patrons often gather outside, enjoying drinks, especially during warm weather.

Lesley Lewis, who has managed Soho’s French House pub for decades, voiced concerns. “Our success relies on patrons who stand,” she explained. “Visitors in Soho want to enjoy themselves, meet others, and not remain seated all the time.”

Media headlines have been critical, with phrases like “Sitting room only at pubs?” circulating. The council responded, clarifying that the draft policy aims to encourage seated consumption to curb noise and disorder, not forbid standing entirely.

“This is about safety,” highlighted Council leader Paul Swaddle. “It’s not about stopping anyone from enjoying a drink at the bar.”

The policy encourages reducing excessive drunkenness through more seating and food service, rather than large standing crowds.

Westminster surpasses other U.K. areas with its number of alcohol-licensed venues. The policy underscores the hospitality sector’s economic importance, while also maintaining the area’s livability for residents.

Nonetheless, higher-level officials, aiming to rejuvenate the hospitality industry post-COVID-19, criticized the proposal. A representative for Prime Minister Andy Burnham noted that standing in pubs is a cherished aspect of British culture, stressing collaboration with the industry to help pubs flourish.

“Pubs are integral to high streets,” Burnham stated, pledging to support them throughout his tenure. Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed intentions to review the policy with upcoming powers, challenging the notion of managing a major nightlife spot with overly restrictive measures.
