Declan Rice Set for Impact in World Cup Semifinals

England midfielder Declan Rice has proven crucial for the Three Lions during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During the Round of 32, England faced DR Congo and secured a 2-1 victory. Rice needed to adapt quickly, moving to right-back during what he described as the most challenging 12 minutes of the match.

In the quarterfinal against Norway, England manager Thomas Tuchel took Rice off just before halftime. Tuchel explained the decision to BBC Sport, stating, “We had to take Elliot [Anderson] or Declan out because Declan had been unwell. Most of the time, he remained in bed for the last three days.” He added that Rice couldn’t endure the full 90 minutes due to his recent sickness.

Rice, who has battled a sickness bug along with hamstring and back issues, is recovering well. According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old midfielder trained with his teammates on Monday, showing improvement. Rice remains optimistic about starting in the upcoming clash against Argentina in Atlanta.

England has faced tough competition to reach the semifinal stage. Their matches against Mexico and Norway were notably grueling. In the Round of 16 at the renowned Azteca, England emerged victorious against Mexico, playing most of the second half with ten players. This win marked the first loss for Mexico at the Azteca since 2013.

In Miami, facing Norway, England endured intense heat and humidity. The match extended into extra time, with England captain Harry Kane describing conditions as more challenging than those in Mexico. England’s journey now leads them to face Argentina and Lionel Messi, the reigning champions.

The other semifinal features France against Spain, paving the way for the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19. England aims to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966, continuing their quest with determination.
