Democratic Senators Discuss Potential 2028 Presidential Candidates

1 hour ago 0

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has not ruled out a possible White House bid in 2028. However, some Democratic senators remain undecided about supporting their party’s 2024 nominee.

Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut mentioned that while he backed Harris in the past, other contenders would be present this time. “I’ve made no decisions about who I would support,” he noted.

Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan anticipated a crowded and chaotic primary, stating, “It’s going to be every Tom, Dick and Harry. And that’s probably where it should be.” Slotkin emphasized the significance of many candidates entering the race.

Harris, while campaigning in Michigan alongside Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, left the door open for another presidential bid. When asked in Detroit about her plans for 2028, Harris did not commit. She urged Democrats to concentrate on the challenges of 2026, warning that success then is crucial for any future ambitions.

Senator Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland stressed the importance of focusing on the upcoming midterm elections, saying, “We’re gonna win back the House and the Senate.” She spoke highly of Harris, underlining her qualifications and personal rapport, but reiterated the need to prioritize the 2026 races.

Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts described the upcoming primary as “wide open.” He expressed that “everyone who wants to run should be able to run for office here,” highlighting the democratic nature of the process.

Another potential 2028 candidate is Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, a prominent figure in the party’s progressive wing. Governor Gavin Newsom of California has also been mentioned as a contender. Despite this, he recently stated he would not run if Harris joined the race.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire encouraged a diverse range of candidates to stimulate a broad discussion on the country’s future.

A poll by the University of New Hampshire in July showed Ocasio-Cortez leading the prospective 2028 Democratic primary in the state with 22% support among likely Democratic voters. Harris received 5% support in the same poll. As of now, neither Harris nor Ocasio-Cortez has officially announced a 2028 campaign.
