Democratic Women’s Caucus Unveils Economic Agenda

3 days ago 0

The Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) has unveiled a comprehensive list of policy priorities for the upcoming Congress as the Democrats aim to regain control of both chambers. The caucus’s economic agenda, shared with The Hill, features eight pillars under which its members have proposed legislation or resolutions. These include affordable care, fair taxes for women and families, and access to education.

Under these pillars, DWC members have introduced over sixty pieces of legislation. These range from initiatives to increase homeownership to measures aimed at preventing price gouging by grocery stores. The agenda includes a bicameral proposal from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). This proposal mandates federal investment in a network of locally-run childcare and early learning centers and family childcare homes.

Additional items in the agenda include Rep. Debbie Dingell’s (D-Mich.) legislation creating a $2,000 tax credit for adults caring for older family members, and Rep. Grace Meng’s (D-N.Y.) bill allowing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to cover hot food purchases. DWC Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.) expressed criticism of the GOP-backed One Big Beautiful Act, stating that her 97-member caucus proposes a “different kind of financial future: one that puts mothers and working families first.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2023, women’s earnings were 83.6 percent of men’s. The unemployment rate for women in August was at 3.9 percent, lower than the 4.4 percent for men. President Trump recently pledged to provide every American adult with a $5,000 dividend if Republicans retain control of Congress.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-Mich.) dividend proposals are part of the DWC’s agenda. The Michigan Democrat introduced legislation to grant $250 per month to adults aged 19 to 67 and provide new families with a $2,000 “baby bonus.” Tlaib stated her proposals aim to “help ensure every woman, child, and family has resources to succeed” in the U.S. She emphasized the people’s right to economic security, criticizing corporate greed.
