Democrats Declare Victory in Pennsylvania Special Election

Democrats have successfully flipped a state House seat in Pennsylvania that has been Republican-held for nearly three decades. Democrat Brandon Dukes leads Republican Scott Timko in the 12th District special election with less than a 100-vote margin. Dukes secured 8,434 votes (50.26 percent), while Timko garnered 8,346 (49.74 percent), based on unofficial election night returns.

Possible Recount Under Pennsylvania Law

Pennsylvania law mandates an automatic recount in statewide races if the victory margin is within 0.5 percent. Chantell McCurdy, election bureau director, noted uncertainty regarding the applicability of this rule to special elections, and officials are consulting legal advisors, according to The Butler Eagle.

Implications for Upcoming Midterms

This apparent victory is part of a broader trend of Democratic gains in special elections nationwide. The party is hopeful about gaining control in the midterm elections as Trump’s approval rating has declined significantly. Dukes’ campaign, along with the Pennsylvania Republican Party, has been contacted for comment.

Governor Josh Shapiro’s Approval

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro celebrated the victory on Facebook, noting the district’s previous strong support for Trump, who won by 18 points in 2024. Shapiro emphasized the significance of flipping a district carried by Trump and traditionally held by the GOP.

Pennsylvanians are rising up and using their power to combat the chaos, cruelty, and corruption—and we’re not slowing down. I was proud to back Brandon. Congratulations State Representative-Elect Dukes—I look forward to getting stuff done together.

The seat was vacated following the resignation of Republican state representative Stephanie Scialabba. Prior to her, the seat was held by Republican Daryl Metcalfe since 1999.

Reaction from Pennsylvania Democratic Party

Eugene DePasquale, chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, praised the victory as unprecedented. He emphasized the dedication of those who tirelessly worked to flip the deep-red seat, highlighting the enthusiasm for the upcoming midterms.

Pennsylvanians across the political spectrum are sick and tired of Republicans’ chaotic, corrupt, and cost-raising agenda — and they’re ready to reject them at the polls and elect Democrats up and down the ballot in historic fashion.

DePasquale expressed optimism about expanding the Democratic state House majority, flipping control of the state Senate, and achieving the first Democratic trifecta in over 30 years.
