Three Democrats from various parts of Virginia held a campaign rally in Henrico County on Monday. They focused on the ongoing conflict in Iran and its broader impacts, emphasizing issues beyond gasoline costs. The war, unpopular among many, has disrupted oil markets and has been a challenging topic for Republicans during the midterm elections. In Virginia, with its significant military presence, the implications extend beyond financial aspects.
Former representative Elaine Luria, campaigning in Virginia’s 2nd District, criticized the current administration, stating, “This war is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties.” Luria aims to unseat Rep. Jen Kiggans, a fellow Navy veteran, in a district anchored in Virginia Beach that houses key Navy facilities.
Shannon Taylor, a prosecutor from Henrico County running in the 1st District against Rep. Rob Wittman, shared similar concerns over Wittman’s support for the war. Former representative Tom Perriello, aiming to retake the 5th District seat lost in 2010 to Rep. John McGuire, also opposes the war, stating that he seeks the position partly “to end this war.”
Joining them was Pete Buttigieg, a former transportation secretary and military veteran, seen by many as a potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028. Buttigieg rallied support, expressing that control of the House is within reach, saying, “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you.” An audience exceeding 200 people, wielding signs supporting all three candidates, responded enthusiastically.
