Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has passed away at the age of 84. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in a hush money case related to sexual abuse. Hastert, who served as the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House, died over the weekend at his home. The cause of death was reported as natural causes, according to Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell.
Hastert’s Career and Legal Troubles
In 2016, Hastert admitted to sexually abusing teenage boys during his time as a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School. He served a sentence after a judge labeled him a ‘serial child molester.’ Besides the prison term, he was fined $250,000. Hastert represented Illinois’ 14th Congressional District from 1987 to 2007 and was the Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007.
