Denver Broncos Focus on Backup Quarterback Battle

The Denver Broncos will face the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason opener Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Head coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday that franchise quarterback Bo Nix will not participate in the game. “Expecting our starters to play around 15 plays,” Payton stated. “Bo won’t play in this game. He’ll play next week.”

Nix underwent surgery on his right ankle during the offseason. The injury also caused him to miss the AFC Championship Game. The cautious approach for his return is expected, especially during the preseason opener.

With Nix not playing, the backup quarterback position is now under scrutiny. This position battle is a focal part of the camp. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger will have a significant opportunity against Atlanta. Payton mentioned that each quarterback would play a half against the Falcons, with Stidham set to start.

Last season, Nix led the Broncos to a successful 14-3 record and the top seed in the AFC. However, his injury kept him out of the AFC Championship Game. Stidham replaced him but struggled, resulting in the Broncos’ loss. Stidham’s performance included completing 17 of 31 passes for 133 yards, a touchdown, an interception, and a lost fumble.

This year, the Broncos have 20 of their 22 starters returning. Their roster holds the potential to match last year’s accomplishments, but another injury to Nix could challenge the team’s success. Securing a reliable backup quarterback is crucial before the regular season begins.
