Deshaun Watson to Start as Quarterback for Cleveland Browns

1 month ago 0

Deshaun Watson will lead the Cleveland Browns as their starting quarterback for the NFL’s regular season opener. This decision promises a season filled with intrigue and drama. Watson’s path resembles a cinematic tale of redemption, where his future actions will either cement his notoriety or forge a new path.

The Browns’ coach, Todd Monken, and general manager, Andrew Berry, selected Watson over Shedeur Sanders after an offseason competition. This choice was shared with the players at a meeting on Monday morning. Watson’s tenure with the Browns has been tumultuous, marked by on-field struggles, a suspension for violating the Personal Conduct Policy, and multiple injuries over the past three years.

The climax of this drama seemed to occur last Saturday when Watson was heavily booed by Browns fans at Huntington Bank Field, starting upon his entry in the second half and lasting until the game concluded.

Watson, following the game, addressed the public in a press conference, describing the fans’ reaction as “personal” and “disrespectful.” He hinted at a possible departure by stating he would feel as though he were playing “17 away games” if he became the starting quarterback.

Despite the negative reception, the Browns remained steadfast in their decision. A source confirmed to OutKick that the Browns’ choice of Watson as the starter was not influenced by the booing or his press conference remarks. Instead, his selection was based on his greater experience and readiness to face NFL defenses compared to Sanders.

While Sanders had a higher completion rate, he also recorded more interceptions during the preseason competition. The coaching staff emphasized to Sanders the importance of staying prepared, given that Watson’s starting role is not guaranteed for the entire season.

In his 19 games with the team, Watson has thrown 19 touchdowns, a performance falling short of the team’s expectations from his acquisition. The Browns invested six draft picks, including three first-rounders, and signed Watson to a $230 million contract, anticipating higher returns.

The Browns have now extended Watson a chance to affirm their investment at the outset of the 2026 season. Although it presents a limited opportunity, it averts the possibility of his outright release. Watson’s journey with the Browns continues with their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 13.
