The Detroit Pistons’ training camp is approaching, and negotiations between the team and All-Star Jalen Duren remain stalled. Duren’s contract discussions are at a standstill as they disagree over terms.
ESPN NBA insider Tim McMahon reported that the Pistons proposed a five-year, $35 million contract to Duren. However, Duren’s representatives are seeking a deal exceeding $40 million.
In a recent episode of “The Hoops Collective” podcast, McMahon described the situation as “a staring contest continuing into September.” He noted that while such scenarios have happened before with other players, like Josh Giddey, it’s unheard of with an All-Star and All-NBA Third Team player.
“It’s quite rare for a team and an All-Star to be at this type of impasse,” McMahon stated.
Another option for Duren is to play this season on a $9.6 million qualifying offer. According to the Detroit Free Press, he must decide by October 1. This route would make him an unrestricted free agent next year, allowing him to seek a maximum contract elsewhere potentially.
McMahon pointed out that taking the qualifying offer could mean leaving “$170 million or more in guaranteed money” behind. Historically, only 21 players have opted for such a qualifying offer since 1998.
Duren’s performance last season was impressive, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He significantly contributed to the Pistons securing 60 wins and the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The future success of the Pistons heavily relies on retaining Duren.
Detroit aims to build a young core and surround them with a strong supporting cast. The collective bargaining agreement’s restrictive apron rules have influenced the Pistons’ negotiation tactics with Duren.
While many advocate for Duren to accept the Pistons’ offer, the final decision remains uncertain. With training camp starting on September 29, the team and Duren still have around four weeks to reach an agreement.
