President Trump Introduces Freedom Haulers Initiative

President Donald Trump is set to launch the Freedom Haulers initiative, aiming to provide military veterans with new opportunities to become commercial truck drivers. This development is part of an effort to reduce illegal immigrant and non-English-speaking truck drivers on American roads.

According to Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, the initiative will expand pathways for veterans to obtain commercial driver’s licenses. This move follows a combined initiative by various departments including Transportation, Labor, Veterans Affairs, and War, to enhance the trucking industry and provide veterans with quality jobs post-service.

DOT Expands CDL Eligibility for Veterans

The Department of Transportation plans to extend the waiver period for veterans from 12 to 24 months to obtain expedited commercial driver’s licenses. Additional CDL training will be offered to those who did not drive heavy commercial vehicles during military service.

States Join Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Program

Indiana and Wyoming will participate in the Even Exchange program, facilitating the transition of military truck drivers into civilian roles.

Werner Enterprises, a trucking company from Omaha, Nebraska, will announce the hiring of 1,400 new veteran drivers.

Efforts to Improve Highway Safety

The administration continues to enforce stricter English language proficiency regulations and remove improperly licensed commercial drivers.

Reports indicate over 24,000 commercial driver’s licenses were removed and more than 28,000 were canceled after being illegally issued to non-citizen drivers.

Highway safety and strengthening the trucking workforce are primary goals of these initiatives.

DOT statistics show truck drivers’ real wages increased by 7.42% during Trump’s administration, contrasting with a decline under President Biden.
