Drone Smuggling Operation Uncovered

The Justice Department has charged 12 individuals involved in a complex drone operation, smuggling contraband into federal prisons across various states. This operation made 38 deliveries of drugs, cell phones, and weapons to 10 different facilities.

Former federal prosecutor Jim Trusty explained the difficulty in intercepting drones used for such illegal activities.

Virginia Prison Officials Intercept Contraband

Virginia Department of Corrections personnel intercepted a significant contraband package valued at approximately $324,000, following an attempted drone incursion at Sussex I State Prison. This package was discovered at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

The suspicious package contained a one-pound bag of suspected methamphetamine, 17 cellphones complete with charging cables, and 20 sheets of paper saturated with an unknown liquid, according to VADOC. Additional items seized included hex wrenches, USB Wi-Fi adapters, SIM cards, disposable lighters, cartons of cigarettes, loose-leaf tobacco, cigars, tattoo ink, perfume, and glue.

Value of Seized Items

Officials estimate the seized contraband’s combined prison value to be roughly $324,000. VADOC Director Joseph Walters emphasized the sophisticated methods employed to smuggle items into correctional facilities.

“This investigation highlights how some people use advanced methods to bring drugs and other dangerous contraband into Virginia Department of Corrections facilities,” Walters stated.

Walters further expressed gratitude to the staff for their vigilance and commitment to maintaining prison security. He assured that both correctional staff and OLES members are prepared to intercept dangerous contraband, thereby securing the safety of corrections team members, inmates, probationers, and the community.

Ongoing Investigation

The incident remains under examination by VADOC’s Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES). Details and information relating to attempted smuggling operations can be reported to OLES at 540-830-9280.
